Blended Intensive Program "M_Dyn - Unveiling Medieval Monastic Dynamics Traditional and digital approaches for landscape, architecture, heritage"

The Blended Intensive Program “Unveiling Medieval Monastic Dynamics Traditional and digital approaches for landscape, architecture, heritage (M_Dyn)” will be held in September 16th - 20th, 2024, in collaboration with MOEBHIOS project.

The partnership of the BIP is composed by the Institute for Medieval Studies (IEM) - NOVA FCSH (Portugal), University of Pavia (Italy), Politecnico di Torino (Italy), The Cyprus Institute (Cyprus), Universidade de Évora (Portugal). It is patronized by CIPA and Future for Religious Heritage.

The BIP is organized by the Instituto de Estudos Medievais, NOVA FCSH (Portugal) in Lisbon (coordinator: Dr. Rolando Volzone), and the University of Pavia participates as an academic partner through the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture and the didactic and research contribution in the field of digital documentation and Digital Heritage conducted by the DAda-LAB laboratory (UniPv contact persons for M_Dyn: Prof. Francesca Picchio, Dr. Raffaella De Marco).

The Erasmus+ M_Dyn program aims to develop an educational approach for the study of religious landscapes in order to understand their diachronic evolution, starting from the Middle Ages, as well as their past and current values.

The course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to understand a historical landscape through theoretical lectures and practical activities, combining on-site and off-site methodologies, and traditional and digital technologies.

Based on a real case study, lectures and practical activities will focus on examining medieval archival documents through historical, cultural and ecological lenses; acquiring, managing and analysing data from digital sensing technologies, and introducing data into GIS environments. The selected case study is the convent of Nossa Senhora da Saudação, located in Montemor-o-Novo in the Alentejo region (southern Portugal), with a focus on the monastic complex and the monastery's heritage water and hydraulic system connected to the surrounding landscape.

The BIP program provides open positions to students in bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs at the University of Pavia for participation and mobility, with funding grants through the Erasmus+ program.
